What Is a Clean Energy Drink? And Why Ours Is Made From Kombucha
Oct 02, 2026
"Clean energy drink" gets searched a lot, and it means different things to different people. For some it's "no sugar". For others it's "no synthetic caffeine". For most it's just "I want the lift without the jitters, the crash and the neon can". Here's what the phrase actually covers, what to look for, and why we ended up building ours on top of kombucha.
What people usually mean by "clean"
- Caffeine from a plant source, not synthetic caffeine powder.
- No artificial sweeteners, colours or preservatives.
- Low sugar, without swapping in a chemistry set to get there.
- Something in the drink that smooths the caffeine out, so it lifts you rather than spikes you.
- Ingredients you can pronounce.
Most mainstream energy drinks fail on at least three of those. A lot of the "better" ones still lean on sweeteners and a long list of extracts to make the label look impressive.
Why we started with kombucha
When we set out to make rok+, the functional range, the question was what to build it on. Water plus additives is what everyone else does. We already had a raw kombucha base, brewed slow in Margaret River, low in sugar, naturally fizzy, with live cultures in it. So the base of every rok+ drink is real kombucha, and the functional ingredients sit on top of that rather than on top of sweetened water.
That matters because it means the drink is already doing something before you add the energy part. And it tastes like a drink, not a supplement.
What's in rok+ Clean Energy
rok+ Clean Energy uses green coffee bean for the caffeine. It's a plant source, and it delivers energy that builds rather than slams. Alongside it is L-Theanine, the amino acid found naturally in tea, which is known for taking the sharp edges off caffeine so you get focus without the buzzing. Ginseng rounds it out. No artificial anything.
The practical difference: it's the drink for the 3pm wall, a study session or a long drive, not a pre-workout you feel in your teeth. You get through the afternoon without being dumped on the floor two hours later.
The rest of the rok+ range
Clean Energy is the one people search for, but the same idea runs through the range.
rok+ Immunity takes the gut-first view: a large share of your immune system lives in your gut, so this one adds Bacillus coagulans (Unique IS2), ginger, turmeric and vitamin C to the raw kombucha base. It's the year-round one.
rok+ Recovery is apple, pear and ginger with electrolytes and B vitamins on the kombucha base. The morning-after drink, whether it was the gym or one too many reds.
How to read an energy drink label in 30 seconds
- Find the caffeine source. If it just says "caffeine", it's synthetic.
- Look for sugar per 100ml, then look for sweeteners further down. Low sugar plus a wall of sweeteners is not clean, it's just different.
- Count the ingredients. Fewer is usually better.
- Check for preservatives. If it's shelf stable for a year, ask why.
- Ask whether there's anything in there to balance the caffeine, or whether it's just caffeine and flavour.
The honest caveat
A clean energy drink is still an energy drink. If you're pregnant, sensitive to caffeine, or under 18, it's not for you, and no amount of green coffee bean changes that. Drink it in the afternoon, not at 9pm, and don't stack it with three coffees. The point is a better lift, not more of it.
Want to try it? The rok+ range ships anywhere in Australia, and it's brewed in the same Margaret River shed as everything else we make.
