About The Local Drinks Co

What is The Local Drinks Co? The Local Drinks Co is a handcrafted drinks brewery based in Margaret River, Western Australia. Founded in 2015, we make three ranges of better-for-you beverages: rok Kombucha (raw, organic fermented tea), rok+ (functional kombucha-based drinks with added health benefits), and Waves & Caves (handcrafted sodas, premium mixers, and sparkling waters). Everything we make is free from artificial flavours, colours, and preservatives.

Where are your drinks made? Every single product we make is handcrafted in small batches in Margaret River, Western Australia - one of Australia's most celebrated food and beverage regions. We use locally sourced ingredients wherever possible and brew with pure Margaret River water.

How long have you been making drinks? Since 2015. We started as a small kombucha brewery in the heart of Margaret River and have grown to offer three distinct ranges. Our team includes award-winning winemakers, which is why flavour is as important to us as health benefits.

Are your drinks Australian made? Yes - 100% Australian made, in Margaret River, WA. We're proudly local and have no intention of changing that.

Kombucha - What It Is and Why It's Good For You

What is kombucha? Kombucha is a fermented tea drink made by fermenting sweetened tea with a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (called a SCOBY). The fermentation process produces probiotics, enzymes, B vitamins, and organic acids - all of which are beneficial for gut health. The result is a naturally fizzy, slightly tart drink that's lower in sugar than soft drinks and packed with live cultures.

Is kombucha good for gut health? Yes - kombucha contains live probiotic cultures that support a healthy gut microbiome. A healthy gut is linked to better digestion, stronger immunity, improved energy levels, and even better mood. Our rok Kombucha is brewed raw, meaning the cultures are still alive and active in every bottle - unlike pasteurised kombucha, which kills the cultures during heat treatment.

What does 'raw' kombucha mean? Raw kombucha means it has not been pasteurised after fermentation. Pasteurisation uses heat to extend shelf life, but it also kills the live probiotic cultures - which are the main health benefit of kombucha. Our rok range is always raw, meaning you get the full benefit of the live cultures in every sip.

How much sugar is in your kombucha? Our rok Kombucha typically contains 4-6g of sugar per 100ml, depending on the flavour. For context, a standard soft drink contains 10-12g per 100ml. The sugar in kombucha is also partially consumed by the culture during fermentation, meaning the body processes it differently to added sugar in soft drinks.

Does kombucha contain alcohol? Kombucha naturally contains a very small amount of alcohol as a byproduct of fermentation - typically less than 0.5% ABV. This is the same level as many fruit juices and is considered non-alcoholic. Our rok Kombucha is suitable for the whole family.

Is kombucha suitable for pregnant women? We recommend consulting your healthcare provider before consuming kombucha during pregnancy. While the alcohol content is very low (under 0.5% ABV), some healthcare professionals recommend avoiding fermented drinks during pregnancy as a precaution.

Can kids drink kombucha? Yes - our rok Kombucha is suitable for children. The alcohol content is below 0.5% ABV, which is comparable to fruit juice. Many parents find it a great alternative to soft drinks for kids, given the lower sugar content and probiotic benefits.

Our Products

What's the difference between rok, rok+, and Waves & Caves? rok Kombucha is our original range - raw, organic fermented tea in a variety of flavours. rok+ is our functional range, built on the same kombucha base but with added ingredients targeting specific health outcomes (clean energy, immunity, recovery). Waves & Caves is our non-kombucha range - handcrafted soft drinks, sodas, premium gin mixers, and natural sparkling waters, all lower in sugar and preservative free. Think of it as the better-for-you soft drink alternative, made in Margaret River WA.

What rok+ functional drinks do you offer? We currently offer three rok+ functional drinks. rok+ Clean Energy contains green coffee bean, L-theanine and ginseng for sustained energy without the crash. rok+ Immunity contains Bacillus Coagulans, turmeric, ginger and vitamin C for gut and immune health. rok+ Recovery contains electrolytes and B vitamins for rehydration and hangover relief.

What sizes do your drinks come in? rok Kombucha is available in 330ml x 8 packs and 750ml x 6 packs. rok+ functional drinks come in 330ml x 8 packs. Waves & Caves Sodas come in 330ml x 12 packs. Waves & Caves Mixers come in 330ml x 24 cartons and 750ml x 6 packs. Waves & Caves Sparkling Water comes in 330ml x 12 packs and 750ml x 6 packs.

Are your drinks gluten free? Yes - all of our drinks are gluten free. We do not use any gluten-containing ingredients in any of our products.

Are your drinks vegan? Yes - all of our products are vegan friendly. We use no animal-derived ingredients.

Do your drinks need to be refrigerated? Yes, we recommend storing all of our drinks refrigerated for best taste and to preserve the live cultures in our kombucha range. If your order arrives at room temperature, simply refrigerate for a few hours before drinking.
