The Best Low-Sugar Soft Drinks in Australia (And What to Look For on the Label)

The soft drink aisle has changed. Where it used to be Coke, Pepsi, and a wall of sugar, it's now full of cans and bottles promising to be better for you. Low sugar. Natural. No artificial anything. Clean label. Gut-friendly. Better-for-you.

Some of them actually are. A lot of them aren't.

The problem is that the language on soft drink labels isn't regulated the way most people assume. A drink can call itself 'natural' while still containing artificial sweeteners. It can be 'low sugar' but loaded with preservatives. It can claim to be 'Australian made' while using imported concentrate.

We make soft drinks in Margaret River, Western Australia. We are biased, obviously - but we also know exactly what goes into a well-made soft drink and what doesn't. Here's how to read a label properly, what to actually look for, and the best low-sugar soft drinks available in Australia right now.

What to look for on the label

Before you get to brand names and flavours, here are the things that actually matter when you're choosing a better-for-you soft drink.

Sugar content

Anything under 6g of sugar per 100ml is genuinely low sugar. Standard cola sits at 10-11g per 100ml. Diet or zero-sugar versions replace that sugar with artificial sweeteners - which some people are fine with and others prefer to avoid.

The sweet spot for a low-sugar soft drink that still tastes like a proper drink, rather than a diet compromise, is 3-6g per 100ml using natural sweeteners.

Sweetener type

This is where most people get caught out. A drink with no added sugar still has to taste sweet somehow. The options are:

*    Natural fruit juice - adds real flavour but also natural sugars

*    Stevia or monk fruit - natural plant-based sweeteners, no calories, generally well tolerated

*    Erythritol or xylitol - sugar alcohols, low calorie, but can cause digestive issues in larger amounts

*    Aspartame, sucralose, or acesulfame K - artificial sweeteners, no calories, but increasingly avoided by health-conscious consumers

Our preference - and what we use in Waves & Caves - is to simply use less sugar rather than replace it with something else. A lower-sugar drink with real cane sugar will often taste more satisfying than a zero-sugar drink with artificial sweeteners.

Preservatives

Sodium benzoate (211) and potassium sorbate (202) are the most common preservatives in soft drinks. Some people react to them. Many health-conscious consumers avoid them on principle.

Preservative-free doesn't mean short shelf life. Waves & Caves sodas have a 12-month shelf life without a single preservative - achieved through quality ingredients, proper carbonation levels, and careful production rather than chemical shortcuts. It's proof that you don't need preservatives to make a drink that lasts

Artificial colours and flavours

Natural colours and flavours are derived from real food sources. Artificial ones are synthesised in a lab. Neither is necessarily harmful in the amounts found in soft drinks, but if you're reading labels, look for 'natural flavours' rather than colour numbers like 102, 110, or 129.

Country of origin and ingredient sourcing

'Australian made' means the product was made in Australia but says nothing about where the ingredients came from. 'Australian made and owned' is a stronger claim. Brands that specify where their water and key ingredients come from are generally more transparent about what's in the bottle.

Quick label checklist:

Sugar: under 6g per 100ml

Sweeteners: natural or none

Preservatives: ideally none

Colours and flavours: natural

Country of origin: Australian made

Ingredients list: short and recognisable

Waves & Caves Ginger Beer

Proper zing, no artificial anything. Lower sugar than most commercial ginger beers. Brilliant straight from the bottle, and the best Moscow Mule base we've found. A genuine Aussie favourite done properly.

Best for: ginger beer fans, Moscow Mules, anyone who finds mainstream ginger beer too sweet

Waves & Caves Passionfruit Soda

Pure tropical refreshment. Real passionfruit flavour, no artificial colours, preservative free. The one that disappears fastest at a gathering. Pour it over vanilla ice cream if you want to make someone very happy.

Best for: tropical flavour lovers, summer entertaining, non-alcoholic drink options

Waves & Caves Lemon Lime and Bitters

The designated driver's best friend. The classic Australian pub order, made properly. Lower in sugar than the bar version, preservative free, and genuinely delicious on its own.

Best for: non-drinkers, designated drivers, anyone who wants something more interesting than soda water

What about kombucha?

Kombucha sits in its own category - it's fermented tea rather than a soft drink, but it's increasingly the choice people reach for when they want something fizzy, flavourful, and genuinely good for them.

Unlike soft drinks, a good raw kombucha also contains live probiotic cultures, organic acids, and B vitamins from the fermentation process. It's lower in sugar than most soft drinks - typically 3-5g per 100ml - and has genuine gut health benefits backed by a growing body of research.

Our rok Kombucha is brewed raw in Margaret River, meaning the cultures are still alive and active in every bottle. If you want something that does more than just taste good, it's worth trying alongside the Waves & Caves range.

The honest answer about low-sugar soft drinks

The best low-sugar soft drink is one that uses real ingredients, keeps sugar genuinely low without replacing it with something worse, and actually tastes like something you want to drink.

That sounds simple but it rules out most of what's on supermarket shelves. Mass-produced soft drinks are optimised for cost and shelf life, not for ingredient quality. The brands worth buying are the ones where someone made a deliberate choice to do things differently.

We made that choice in Margaret River in 2015 and we've been making it ever since. Our Waves & Caves range is our answer to the soft drink aisle - and we think it's a pretty good one.
